- Although the world's largest quilt-book publisher, Martingale & Company, has released more than 700 titles and sold more than 15 million books worldwide, it was started on a modest foundation. Launched in 1976 as That Patchwork Place® by president Nancy J. Martin, the company's focus started with sewing classes and kits. Demand for Nancy's kits quickly increased. Nancy's husband, Dan, added his business expertise to the mix, and together they relocated from New Jersey to Woodinville, Washington. From this new home, the company's focus shifted to publishing quilt books and the company evolved from a cottage industry into a full-fledged business.
