NSnet - Maritime News and Information

Description

NSnet was conceived in 1993 as an experiment in applying emerging information and communications technologies in the maritime industry. The project began as a basic Internet service provider (ISP) for US shipbuilders, and in late 1993 went on to establish one of the first sites available on the Web. In 1994, NSnet was established as a Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) MARITECH project, and was the first project in that program to deal specifically with information technologies. The project team was led by the Marine Systems Division of the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute. The Division has since been dissolved, and government support of the project ended June 30, 2001.
