Hikaru Ryu is a small martial arts school with a lot to be proud of. Established in Perth, Western Australia mid 2000 we have developed and continue to develop two world class offerings: self defence courses and martial arts training.
Much of this I attribute to our 'back to basics' approach; we are never very far away from questioning assumptions or preconceptions. To date, the work we have done has shown focus and clarity when dealing with diverse issues.
For instance, our Women Self Defence course (a web version is availabe in our download area) was always about creating distinct value for participants within a 2-3 hour timeframe. This flies against the grain as other martial arts instructors would feel that this is an inadequate amount of time to gain combat proficiency. And they are absolutely correct! However, our philosophy is that women self defence is not all about combat proficiency. This only meant that we had to develop a solution for participants who are almost always hesitant to hurt others while not fully understanding the fact that "bad things are not always done by bad people".
