The Newt: New College's Happening Paper!

The Newt was launched at the beginning of Trinity Term 2004 by a core group of about ten students at New College, Oxford University, which quickly expanded to about twenty and now twenty-five. The Editor, Deputy Editor and Layout Editor joined together again after having produced two sold-out runs of the play "Wit" for their production company, Naked Eye Productions. The Newt comes out with an issue every two weeks during term on Tuesday afternoons. Although we are primarily funded by the JCR, we are entirely independent of it as an institution and do not claim to represent its views.
If you haven't realized this already, your college at Oxford is the primary community of most students. A paper both creates a stronger sense of community and provides a forum of public recognition and debate.
In addition, by setting down public events in writing, our experiences come to seem more solid and real. By having a public record, it will also provide accountability and be more difficult to invoke misinformation in JCR discussions. Moreover, it will provide an archive of knowledge about the past that will give New College students a more easily accessible and unbiased sense of historical depth than ever before. Although these were my main reasons for starting the paper, I recognize that there are other functions that the paper fulfills, e.g. entertainment.
