About Us

Rebecca Ball Rust founded the North Carolina Haiku Society in 1979 to promote the writing and appreciation of haiku in English. Our members support these goals by writing haiku, by participating in meetings and events, and by maintaining this Web site.

Most NCHS members try to write haiku in English that capture some elements of classic Japanese haiku. For a brief description of what this means, see What's a haiku?

The first Haiku Holiday was celebrated at Bolin Brook Farm near Chapel Hill, North Carolina, in the United States of America on January 26, 1980. Since then, all of our annual meetings have been held at Bolin Brook Farm -- thanks to our gracious host and member since the beginning, Jean Earnhardt.
