Description
The Native Sons was established by two brothers who are descendants of the great Chiefs of the Narragansett Nation. They are committed to keeping their culture alive and well. They do this by cutting, carving, crafting, and designing Native American items. Their specialty is working wampum, unlike anyone else. Their craftsmanship skills were taught to them by their grandfather, who was taught by his own grandfather. This process has been handed down from generation to generation.
Wampum is made from the quahog shell. This shell was used by the East Coast Indians for ceremonies, adornment, and as a medium of exchange. The deep purple part of the shell had double the value of the white part. Wampum became known as the native badge of wealth. It is noted for it's role in the historic "Treaty Belts" of the Iroquois, which tell of tribal history and agreements with the United States. Wampum has been said to be the passport to the spirit world.
