Free Online Medical Diagnosis by Symptoms
Description
Electronic Medical Solutions, Inc. ("EMS") developed and markets a revolutionary, self-screening tool called MySymptoms, which allows patients in a relatively short period of time to identify the likely causes of their symptoms. The web-based program is revolutionary in that it approaches self-screening from the patient's point of view! Of the approximately 2 million sites that provide "medical diagnosis," virtually all of them, including hospital websites, require the patient to know what their diagnosis is before they can research the implications of the disease/condition and the alternative treatment options. Physicians know that this approach is backwards. They always begin their evaluations of a patient by asking about the patient's symptoms, not by asking the patient what disease they have. The average person can tell you that they have a headache, pain in their lower back, or difficulty breathing, etc. However, they do not know why they have these symptoms, but they are interested in learning more about what is happening to their body.
MySymptoms's user-friendly, patented navigation allows the patient to point to the part of their body where their symptoms are occurring. MySymptoms then presents the patient with symptom categories. Once a symptom category is selected, groups of symptoms are displayed in boxes. These boxes of symptoms typically occur in the conditions or diseases the patient may have. By selecting the most appropriate box, a list of possible conditions that might produce these symptoms is displayed. By reading the short summary of each condition, the user can further discriminate the most likely condition he/she is experiencing. MySymptoms provides links to physicians and specialists that treat these conditions. Additionally, hyperlinks are offered to sponsors' educational websites and to nationally known educational websites for each condition to further assist the user in screening their condition and obtaining other useful information including potential treatment options.
The navigation of MySymptoms was the concept of Oleg K. Chikovani, M.D. and William R. Dobkin, M.D., neurological surgeons at Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach, California (the "Founders"). The Founders recognized the weakness in the medical industry's resource organization. The disease centric organization of medical textbooks, web sites and other electronic tools left a void for the millions of Americans seeking information regarding their health issues. With the majority of computer literate baby boomers approaching age 55 , the demand for patient-friendly interactive health tools is growing. The Founders began creating MySymptoms in August 1999, and received a patent on the navigational architecture in 2002. The Founders incurred more than 2,000 hours inputting information into MyElectroniMD's database, which currently covers approximately 20,000 symptoms and 1,200 diseases/conditions. The accuracy and sophistication of MySymptoms has been reviewed by EMS's advisory board, which consists of 17 doctors with expertise in orthopedics, radiology, oncology, hematology, ophthalmology, urology, otolaryngology, obstetrics, gynecology, vascular surgery, cardiovascular and thoracic surgery. Additionally, the product was reviewed and approved by the medical advisory committees of Tenet Healthcare Corporation, Memorial Health Services and Hoag Hospital. MySymptoms has also been favorably reviewed by the medical director of VHA's Laurel Health.
