Description

Morningside Volunteer Fire Department is one of 39 independent volunteer fire companies located in Prince George's County, Maryland that provide fire and EMS services to the citizens of Prince George's County and the surrounding counties. The nearly 1,200 volunteers throughout the County are augmented by approximately 700 career staff of the Prince George's County Fire/EMS Department.

Morningside Volunteer Fire Department is located just inside the Capital Beltway (Interstate - 495), one mile from the main gate of Andrews Air Force Base and three miles from Washington DC. The Department is one of 45 fire companies that make up the volunteer-career combination system of the Prince George's County Fire/EMS Department. We are located in the 3rd Battalion and response to call in the 3rd , 5th, and 7th Battalions. Rescue Squad 27, one of eleven heavy-duty squads throughout the County covers over 12 miles of the Capital Beltway. Rescue Squad 27 is the busiest heavy-duty squad in the state of Maryland. We are consistently rank among the busiest Heavy Rescue Squads Nationally. In 2004 Firehouse Magazine rank Squad 27 the 4th busiest in the nation.

The Department was organized in December 1944, after a tragic loss of two lives by fire, in order to protect Morningside and neighboring areas from fires and the resultant loss of life and property through concerted organized fire fighting. The first truck, a 1929 model A Ford, was purchased from the Oxon Hill Volunteer Fire Department. In order to get further protection and assistance, the Department joined the Prince George's Volunteer Fireman's Association in 1945.
