- Last night, I was reading "A Thread of Grace". It takes place in Italy during World War II and is the story of how local Italians hide Jews, both local people and refugees, from the Germans. There is one part where an AWOL German Officer/Doctor is talking to a woman about her deceased baby. The baby was accidentally killed by someone, and had Down syndrome. One of the creepy parts about the book is that it shows you the German POV at the time about life and why some lives had more value. Now the doctor is a complicated character, but he starts talking about how it is better that the child died, as she would have a miserable life and would bring the whole family down. She wouldn’t be able to function or anything. The mother, however, is light years ahead of her time, and doted on the child - giving her what we’d call early intervention, and by age 2 or 3 she could talk and walk, laugh and run, and loved life.
