About Marlene

Let me tell you a little about myself. I was born in Parkersburg, West Virginia, February 19, 1947, to Fred O'Dell and Deloris Skidmore. However, at the age of about 4, I went to my new family, Harold Franklin Hawkins and Reva Mason Barbour Hawkins. We lived in a number of places while I was a child. While my Dad, whose stage name was Hawkshaw Harold Hawkins, (picture) was on the WWVA Jamboree in Wheeling, West Virginia, we lived in St. Clairsville, Ohio, on a small farm. Later we moved to the Dickerson Road Trailer Park in Nashville, Tennessee, where he was on the WSM Grand Ole Opry. One of his big hits was Slow Poke, written by PeeWee King, and his last big hit, in the top ten for three consecutive months after his untimely death, was Lonesome 7-7203.

While my Dad was traveling and entertaining the world, my Mother basically raised me by herself. My Mother and Dad divorced in 1958, during which time I lived with my Grandparents, Mom's parents, Cassius and Clara Barbour. Grandma was the most wonderful woman who ever walked this ole earth. I know my grandmother is waiting for me in heaven. If she did not make it, I don't see how anyone will. I used to call her an angel. However, I found out that, by doing so, I was lowering her status. So, now I just refer to her as a Saint, which she was that.

While living with my Grandmother, I used to sing in the old church which sat right across the creek from her house, Camp Creek Tabernacle. I loved singing and the people there seemed to love for me to sing. There was a lady, I don't remember her name, but she used to buy sheet music for me and teach me the songs. There weren't many services that I didn't get to sing.
