Description
Markdale is a working sheep and cattle property of 8,000 acres with a landscape of rugged grandeur, and steep grassland hills interspersed with tracts of dense eucalypt forrest. It is also home to a full panalopy of Australian wildlife such as kangaroos, wallabies, echidnas, and many native birds including parakeets and kookaburras, for whom the green oasis around the garden acts as a magnet. In the late 1940s and early 1950s, two of Australia's greatest designers, architect Professor Leslie Wilkinson and garden designer Edna Walling, joined forces to create a haven of such comfort and beauty there are few to equal it in Australia. In the heart of the property lies the homestead surrounded by its exceptional garden.
Geoffrey, the third son, and his wife, Janet, took over the property in 1933. It was Janet Ashton's inspired choice to employ Professor Wilkinson and Edna Walling to redesign the garden and homestead. When the property was taken over by their son, young Geoff, in 1984, his wife, Mary, was equally passionate about maintaining and extending the five acres of garden, while adhering to the spirit of the Walling design.
