The fishing grounds in the Bay of Islands are very close to the two major ports of Russell and Paihia, and on a fast modern boat like Major Tom II, with a top speed of 30 knots and a cruising speed of 20 knots, marlin waters can be reached within 30 minutes.
A 40 minute flight from Auckland International Airport (or a 3 hour drive) brings you to some of the best fishing grounds in the world. The Bay of Islands irregular coastline embraces 150 islands and is steeped in historical assocation with NZ's early settlement. Russell was the first Capital of NZ, and home to the second oldest gamefishing club in the world. The walls of the Russell Swordfish Club are filled with the artefacts, photos and fish of some of the world's fishing legends.
Few visitors depart the Bay of Islands and Russell in particular without a lasting impression of the place, and the people. The regions temperate marine climate is near perfect.
