Title

The Madison Observer - Representing voices of social justice since 2003

Description

The Madison Observer is an independent, student-controlled publication with two main goals: to amplify the voices of those who are often silenced in the corporate media, and to elevate the level of political and cultural discourse on this campus.

Last year, when the Madison Observer was just getting off the ground, a certain opinion columnist for one of the other campus newspapers wrote something to the effect of “why do we need another student newspaper? We already have two.” The beautiful irony in this statement is that this columnist answered his own question simply by asking it: when the established media becomes a defender of the status quo, new forms of media must arise to challenge it. A healthy flow of information, opinions and simple expression is absolutely vital to a functioning, educated, compassionate society, and the Madison Observer was founded with this in mind.

Looking at the bigger picture, the social justice movement’s relationship with the media has never been very good. Because the mainstream media is all too often simply the mouthpiece of the government, of the powerful and of the status quo, the voices of social justice (broadly defined as anyone struggling against these forces—activists, stigmatized minority groups, workers, etc.) are, again and again, ridiculed, distorted or ignored altogether.
