The Alaskan values of exploration and independence are a source of inspiration in the studio, driving me to experiment with a variety techniques. I often mix wax, paper, ink, powdered pigments, text, or fabric with more conventional painting media while still using traditional Alaskan subject matter. However, like many here, I am a transplant and my Southern heritage continues to be deep well from which to draw. Southern folk paintings and their bright vivid colors have influenced my own use of color, and the Southern tendency to understand the world in terms of stories has followed me to Alaska. An animal's relationship to other figures in the painting, its facial expression or posture, and actual narrative text are elements I use to tell a visual story. Many times I won't fully understand the significance of the tale until long after the painting is done. This is a gift that comes from the same mysterious source out of which all inspiration arises—a source whose center is everywhere and circumference nowhere.
