- Recently I obtained a former desktop computer for use as my server on my local network. With little space to put another monitor, I decided to look for alternative ways to manage the server sans the monitor. I came across a tool called TightVNC and I love it! I can access and control the server from my laptop. TightVNC also has a built in web server, that I believe is java based, which allows access to the host computer via the web. So, as long as you know the IP address of the host computer or of your router and you use port forwarding (more on that in a minute) then you can control a computer on your network from anywhere you can access the web. This post will focus on the setup of TightVNC to gain access from a WAN rather than a LAN since the LAN setup is very simple.
