- For Christmas, my wife got me a new alarm clock. It is very cool and has a couple of features which I very much wanted, particularly the ability to store different radio channels as presets (rather than swizzling the tuning knob, an imprecise science at which I do not excel). It also has a green backlit screen, upon which all the relevant information (i.e. the time) is written in black, as opposed to the usual black-screen-with-red-numbers which I am used to. The green screen is quite bright - it has to be, so that you can actually read the time. But it is bright enough to light up the room at night when all the lights are off… not exactly a feature I was hunting for. I grew up outside a town, well outside the suburbs of the city, where nighttime meant black - you could wave your hand in front of your own nose and not see it.
