- Focusing on the combination of information technology for remote ordering, proactive marketing to develop new markets and cutting edge supply chain techniques to fulfill and deliver orders effectively, the Last Mile Supply Chain Center is a research-oriented enterprise based at Michigan State University. Our goal is to serve as an unbiased, third party resource for retailers and manufacturers that sell directly to customers in their homes or places of business. Over the past five years our research group has conducted research projects with OfficeDepot.com, FedEx and numerous home delivery grocers (ongoing research sponsored by the National Science Foundation by a $250,000 grant - “ITR: Internet Disintermediation of Food Delivery – Spanning the Last Mile”). The goal of the project is two-fold: first, to document and study the development of the direct to consumer supply chain as enabled by the Internet, and second, to provide retailers and manufacturers with a neutral, unbiased resource to gain information about developments regarding supply chain, marketing and IT within the direct to consumer supply chain.
