About this Web Site

Before I start travelling I wanted a website that i could update from 'on the road'; to let friends know what I was up to and where I was. I also wanted to make it semi-interactive so that friends could leave messages, add links, photos et cetera and I could sort of keep contact while I'm away... the result are these pages, built very slowly over a year. Of course it would have been a lot quicker if I knew what I know now before I started, so below I'll outline how I built this site just incase any of you guys are thinkin' of building something similiar.

If you are going to make an interactive web site (ie: something that has a guestbook, photo album and the like) you are going to need something a like more complicated than HTML. There are many options such as ASP, Perl and PHP... this site is mainly PHP with a few Perl scripts. When I first started making the site I used ASP but quickly realised PHP was better suited to personal sites like this. ASP is linked to a lot of (expensive) microsoft software plus it is harder to find free scripts and cheap hosting, ASP generally seems to be used by corperate web sites. PHP is open-source so there are a lot of scripts available for free from sites like Hotscripts and PHP Resource Index and there are really good tutorials at PHP.net. The basics of PHP are also quite easy to pick up, it is usually just a small command imbedded into HTML code. Perl scripts are a lot harder to deal with but they do some things a little better than PHP, the links page uses a Perl script.

This site is hosted by ICDSoft for $60 US a year (about $110 Australian) plus $5 US for the domain name (i wanted kilbot.com but it was taken). You can get free PHP hosting from some places such as Spaceports or you can even get places such as Blogger which supply the whole web-log structure, but needless to say these places have severe limitations. One of the biggest problems with free hosting is that they can delete your stuff without any notice and seeing as though some of the stuff on this site is my only copy I figured it was worth the money. Sure ICDSoft can delete my shit, but they're an American company so at least I can sue for emotional damage - it's the American way.
