In 1989, I hooked up with David Barnes and started “It’s Greek To Me”. With a new concept of selling apparel in the college fraternity /sorority market, we traveled around in vans to college campuses all across the U.S., selling our logo’d apparel on the spot. Prior to this our customers placed special orders for their apparel, so we really filled a niche and grew fast the first few years.
By 1993 we were nationwide in the college Greek market, and started receiving a few inquiries from high school coaches and boosters in the area. We quickly learned that our college jackets and apparel also served the high school market well, so we began branding our apparel “GTM Sportswear”. We started our new division by sending out samples of our jackets to schools in Kansas. By eliminating the “middle man”, we were able to offer jackets to groups for around $30, which was a better quality product than they had been buying for $45-60. Offering this much value allowed us to grow in this market very fast, in fact over 25% annually the past 12 years.
Our company now employs almost 200 people. Our 40+ sales reps serve the entire U.S. right out of Manhattan, KS. Our sales strategy of selling via the phone and web instead of door-to door allows customer savings of 10-20%. Furthermore, our factory direct supply chain allows another 20% savings.
