FeatureMePotentials:Process

The process of becoming a Featured WikiPage begins with the nomination process which adds a tag to pages community members believe could be good pages for AboutUs to be featured.

The idea with the nomination system is to generate discussion about a specific wiki page and to provide pointers to help editors polish their pages with the hopes of becoming a Featured article. Community members review these discussions and pages by looking at the FeatureMePotentials list which is all the candidates currently nominated.

While this presents a quick and easy method for people who might be new to the AboutUs system or new to wiki editing, it does require a bit of behind-the-scenes editing to then build the FeatureMePotentials list after WikiPages have been nominated.

NOTE: On pages that have been nominated that are in a foreign language, just change the FeatureMeNew to FeatureMeForeign (which adds a note about all this) and leave a message for the person who nominated the page explaining that we don't currently support features on WikiPages that don't have English (multi-lingual English + other languages are more than encouraged).

Creating the FeatureDiscussion page

(Note: As a Community Task, this is referred to as ProcessFeaturedNominations.)

This list is a primer on how to build the FeatureMePotentials list for active community members and staff. While it is possible for other community members to follow these steps, it's probably more valuable to go through the full nomination process as it helps put wiki pages on our radar for being featured.

  1. Open up a page that has been nominated, but hasn't been added to the FeatureMePotentials list. These can be found here: Category:FeatureMeNew
  2. Replace the NominatedPageBadge with:

  3. Open up the
     page
  4. Add this to the very top of that FeatureDiscussion page:

    <noinclude><small> < Go back to | Go back to Pages Nominated to be Featured ></small><br></noinclude>
    ==== featured discussion====
    * <span
    class="plainlinks">Please participate in this discussion by adding your thoughts (click here).</span>
    * Nomination processed on ~~~~~

  5. Save the page.

  6. Edit the page again and take out the /FeatureDisussion from the first and second lines.

  7. Make a comment

  8. Add the Discussion link to the Potentials list. FeatureMePotentials

  9. Leave a note for the editor(s) on his/her/their talk page(s).

  10. You have Processed the nomination, therefore go back to the Nominated Page you just processed and remove .

Removing a nomination

(Note: As a Community Task, this is part of NurtureNominees.)

After a few months on being in nomination, occasionally we remove a nomination if the page just hasn't been worked on. (Consistent work to improve the page will usually result in us keeping the page nominated as a potential feature, even if it's still "not quite ready").

  1. Open up the three relevant pages: the DomainPage, the FeatureMePotentials list, and the "featured discussion page" (usually Pagename/FeatureDiscussion)
  2. On the DomainPage, change the template call from FeatureMeCurrent to FeatureMeOld . (This changes the message to indicate that the page was formerly nominated and was taken off nomination after months of discussion, but encourages people to review the discussion and make adjustments accordingly and renominate if they like.)

  3. Copy the notes from the "FeaturedDiscussion page and put them on the DomainPage, replacing where the call is made.

  4. Leave a note at the end of these notes as to why the nomination was ended.

  5. Save the page.

  6. Delete the FeaturedDiscussion page as it's no longer relevant. (Usually in the summary, I put a note like, "taking out old nomination, see notes on the main page for why).

  7. Delete the reference to the FeaturedDiscussion on the FeatureMePotentials list.

That's it.
