What
WikiPages that have been nominated as featured candidates need to be process by putting a template on them and then transcluding that information into the FeatureMePotentials list. ProcessFeaturedNominations is a task that is part of Projects:FeaturedContent.
See related tasks: NurtureNominees and WriteFeaturedBlurbs for information on helping to encourage the pages that have been nominated and how to write and post the blurbs.
Why
Featured WikiPages serves a number of community functions:
- It provides a way of celebrating cool things and contributions to the wiki
- It is a way of encouraging and promoting the creation of high quality WikiPages.
- The featured blurbs themselves often are used as a messaging tool to show and teach users on tricks and techniques that might improve their WikiPages, these can include notes on using photos, adding community reviews and the like.
- To encourage and teach TheWikiWay by engaging active members in conversations.
- It provides a dynamic element to the front page, which not only helps inform visitors and get them to return regularly to see what's been featured, it also effect Google rankings by providing regular content and links to pages for Google's spiders to scrape.
- By becoming a featured page on the AboutUs front page, domain page owners will have the incentive of increased traffic.
DoneDone
All new nominations have been processed at the end of the iteration. Because of the way these are processed, this list will be blank.
Over the iteration, this will probably amount to 10-30 new nominees to process.
Steps to get to DoneDone
Generally, every WikiPage that gets nominated is added to the FeatureMePotentials list. There are two exceptions:
- Pages in a foreign language (non-English). Because we don't currently have the staff to read WikiPages in other languages than English, we've made a decision to only feature those in English. WikiPages that are multi-lingual with English and other languages can and should be encourage to be featured however. In the case of non-English WikiPages, we put a note on the discussion section explaining the situation and encouraging them to add a multi-lingual section and renominate the page at that time. Eventually, we'd like to support features in other languages. On pages that have been nominated that are in a foreign language, change the {{FeatureMeNew}} to {{FeatureMeForeign}} (which adds a note about all this) and leave a message for the user who nominated the page explaining what happened.
- WikiPages that have been written by a staff member or as part of a "buy it done" article service. This is because we're encouraging community participation, not simply trying to celebrate great articles that we've paid to be written. There have been and are always exceptions to this rule, but generally, we don't feature these pages.
Actual ProcessFeaturedNominations steps:
- All pages that have been nominated should have the template {{FeatureMeNew}}. You can find new nominees by looking that this template's What Links Here.
- All new nominees need to be modified (by pasting a specific template into the page) and then having the featured discussion transcluded into the FeatureMePotentials list. The process as it currently stands can be found at FeatureMeProcess.
