- Newspapers in mature markets show a 'remarkable resilience' against the digital onslaught, the World Association of Newspapers said today as it revealed worldwide circulations rose 2.3 per cent last year. Advertising revenues were up 3.77 per cent in 2006 from the previous year, while north America was the only continent to register a circulation decline, WAN said as it released its World Press Trends report. But while Asian newspapers boomed, much of western Europe, reported a circulation dip last year, down 2.66 per cent. The report found free daily newspapers were booming, accounting for nearly 8% of all global newspaper circulation and 31.94 per cent in Europe. The data was released to more than 1,600 publishers, editors and other senior newspaper executives from 109 countries attending the 60th World Newspaper Congress in Cape Town. (Media Guardian)
