History
The company was founded in 1939 as J.L. Turner & Son, a wholesale business in Scottsville, Ky. As early as 1955, the company introduced and championed the dollar store concept by opening retail stores where all the items were sold for $1. The first store of the company was opened in Springfield, Kentucky, on June 1, 1955. In a matter of two years, the annual sales of the company were $5 million with 29 stores. The company went public in the year 1968 as Dollar General Corporation, posting annual sales of more than $40 million and net income in excess of $1.5 million. In 1968, the company offered its stocks publicly and changed its name to Dollar General. In 1983, the company acquired the 280 stores of the P.N. Hirsh Division of Interco, Inc.; in 1985, it acquired 206 stores and a warehouse from Eagle Family Discount Stores, also from Interco, Inc. Over the years following its establishment as a simple retail outlet, Dollar General has shown an amazing growth to this day leading the general merchandise field.
Business Profile
The stores of Dollar General are typically located in small shopping plazas or strip malls in local neighborhoods. In total, the company has over 69,500 Employees. During the recent years, the company has constructed a good number of stand-alone stores especially in areas not served by another general-merchandise retailer. In the same store and often in the same shelf, Dollar General offers both first-quality and lesser-quality merchandise. The products sold by the company range from off-brand goods to closeouts of name-brand items. The basic concept of the company earlier was to price every sold good at $1. However, today, the case is different as the prices go even up to $20. Nevertheless, in every case of pricing, the cost is rounded off to set price points.
The main targets of Dollar General are communities that are too small to attract a Wal-Mart. In the Dollar store format, the company competes with national chains Family Dollar and Dollar Tree, regional chains such as Fred's in the southeast, and several independently owned stores. During recent times, the company has introduced several stores in the vicinity of Wal-Mart Supercenter locations in suburban areas and has introduced multiple stores. This gives a hassle free shopping experience for low prices. Quite interestingly, more than 30 percent of the Dollar General products are still priced under $1 or less. The small stores of the firm average about 6, 900 sq. ft. The retail outlets of the company are concentrated in several rural and urban neighborhoods.
