Define PortlandTech
Our Work / Content / Tasks / Define PortlandTech (Sanwal and Mubin)
Project:
Description
Portal PortlandTech catalogs all the Tech related companies in Portland, Oregon, that are on the web. Bringing all these companies under one heading makes it easier for a person to find what they are looking for.
This is a broad term, as we want to encourage a variety of pages to "fall under the PortlandTech umbrella" -- all the companies in the Portland area that research, develop and produce technology OR are IT related.
- Communications developers,
- Software developers,
- Web designers/developers,
- Companies hosting websites,
- Web service providers (any service related to the internet),
- Companies that make technology easier to use,
- Companies providing employment in these fields,
- Organizations providing support for or information on technology products, services or related. This includes user groups like the Portland Linux/Unix User Group, as well as general organizations like FreeGeek.
(add what you think is needed)
- Consulting, Startups,Non-Profit and search engine optimization related...too!Asma(Thoughts only :)!)
- Asma, i think that that comes under - 5. Web service providers (any service related to the internet), but yeah! Thats the idea! Great! Peace! :-) Mubin Kumail
What PortlandTech is not
Sites like these should have nothing to do with Portland'Tech' MomHub.com, PublicPress.com etc..
These pages we think are not PortlandTech.....NonPortlandTech
Why?
This needs to be done because, people working on PortlandTech seem to to be running into people pages, and company pages that have nothing to do with technology. So in order to save time, and focus our attention on the tech related companies this needs to be done.
Done When
When we've reached a definition that is accepted by all, and all the 'extra' sites are EXTERMINATED! MUAHAHAHahahaha.....

IRC Conversation
Here was a recent conversation in the IRC about this subject (bold parts added for reference to more critical reasons for this task):
- [9:11PM] mehrunnisa: there are some companies in the POrtlandTEch which arent exactly tech related
- [9:11PM] TakKendrick: which ones
- [9:12PM] TakKendrick: or maybe rather, we should have some sort of place for those to be listed maybe...
- [9:12PM] AyeshaAslam: i just did a page on Mike Williams...who is a lawyer...and they basically do pharma cases...
- [9:12PM] AyeshaAslam: but he was in PortlandTech for some reason...
- [9:12PM] TakKendrick: like on either the Project status page, or the Content Log.
- [9:13PM] mehrunnisa: AdamDuvander.com
- [9:13PM] mehrunnisa: this gfor instance
- [9:13PM] AyeshaAslam: Wdolaw.com
- [9:13PM] AyeshaAslam: this one as well
- [9:13PM] mehrunnisa: most people who have been working on portlandech seem to be running into comoanies which are just random
- [9:13PM] TakKendrick: yeah, the Wdolaw is where Mike Williams works
- [9:14PM] mehrunnisa: lawyer firms etc...
- [9:14PM] AyeshaAslam: yes..
- [9:14PM] TakKendrick: so, some of the lawyer firms are because they work in tech law, but...
- [9:14PM] TakKendrick: I agree that these seem a bit obscure for PortlandTech, even with the wide definitions Ray wanted for "what is PortlandTech."
- [9:15PM] Mubin: there are some companies e.g 'ecotrust' that is something to do with the environment
- [9:15PM] Mubin: that have nothing to do with tech at all!
- [9:15PM] Mubin: do we still make the pages?
- [9:15PM] mehrunnisa: hmm i basically asked if those articles were there by mistake..or some error..seems they arent.....
- [9:16PM] asma: Wdlaw is working for helth care systems which are tech oriented
- [9:16PM] TakKendrick: My thought would be, if you see one that's likely not PortlandTech, why don't you just make a note in the Content Log and we can take a look. I wouldn't worry about working on them until we've had a look.
- [9:17PM] TakKendrick: I guess
- [9:17PM] mehrunnisa: hmm alright...
- [9:17PM] TakKendrick: unless you think there's a lot lot of them...
- [9:17PM] TakKendrick: in which case we might need to see how they got tagged as PortlandTech in the first place
- [9:18PM] Mubin: ok
- [9:19PM] Mubin: i is down wid dat
- [9:19PM] Mubin:
- [9:19PM] TakKendrick: I'm just looking at who tagged these pages as PortlandTech...
- [9:20PM] TakKendrick: yeah. it's kind of unclear on some of these.
- [9:20PM] TakKendrick: I think maybe this has to do with how loose we've been on the definition of "PortlandTech"
- [9:20PM] TakKendrick: which is to say we don't really have a definition
- [9:20PM] TakKendrick: maybe we need one that we can all agree on...
- [9:21PM] mehrunnisa: yeah i guess unless that is defined clearly this will remain vast..very vast..
- [9:21PM] asma: They have internet based form where you can report a case...
- [9:21PM] Mubin: who has?
- [9:21PM] TakKendrick: and if we don't have a good definition for "PortlandTech" then this will become a problem with all the other "Tech" cities as well...
- [9:21PM] mehrunnisa: what?
- [9:21PM] asma:
- [9:21PM] mehrunnisa: yeah...
- [9:21PM] TakKendrick: Asma is talking about the WdoLaw firm I think
- [9:22PM] asma: Yes...
- [9:22PM] TakKendrick: So, then, let's make this a task... create a definition for what encompasses "PortlandTech"
- [9:22PM] AyeshaAslam: yes but that way everyone these days has a website and a form for feedback etc...that wouldnt classify them as a tech company
- [9:22PM] Mubin: anything slightly technology related. for e.g in ecotrust.com, they are using technical means to 'clean up' the environment. i guess thats cool.
- [9:23PM] TakKendrick: I'm creating a real task for content as we speak ... er... type
- [9:23PM] TakKendrick: who would like to lead this task?
- [9:23PM] Mubin: sanwal
- [9:24PM] Mubin: and mubin
- [9:24PM] TakKendrick: my thought is someone in Lahore helps come up with a definition that they agree upon, and we just append it to the task and then work on it there.
- [9:24PM] mehrunnisa: sanwal mubin asma work on it day in day out..portlnadtech that is
- [9:24PM] mehrunnisa: i think this can be decided upon in one or few standup meetings here
- [9:25PM] asma: We have to observe pages then tagg them whether are tech oriented or not...
- [9:25PM] TakKendrick: alright, here's the task page: http://www.aboutus.org/Define_PortlandTech
- [9:25PM] TakKendrick: so, my suggestion is that Sanwal and Mubin (who either volunteered or were "volunteered") can work on a) building out the task page a bit (and I'll take a look at it tomorrow)
- [9:26PM] TakKendrick: and coming up with a "first draft" of a what's PortlandTech definition
- [9:26PM] TakKendrick: ideally, if you can do this tonight,
- [9:26PM] Mubin: cool. today after lunch, we'll work on it
- [9:26PM] Mubin: finally! more respnsibility!
- [9:26PM] TakKendrick: then tomorrow when John, Chris, Marshall (who's an outside blogger writing about this) and I meet we can make changes and pitch it to Ray to see what he thinks
- [9:27PM] TakKendrick: and then have a second (or third) draft, which y'all can look at again tomorrow
