  • Q&A: Wikipedia’s Founder on the Rise of Wiki Technology - Newsweek: International Editions - MSNBC.com
Maybe it's just me, but I don't understand why they interviewed Jimbo Wales as opposed to ..oh let's say, Ward Cunningham, who invented the wiki in the first place. Wikipedia didn't change the world, wikis changed the world. If it wasn't for the invention of the wiki in the first place, there would be no Wikipedia. "The software behind Wikipedia" is the wiki. The invention of the wiki came before MediaWiki, which is the wiki engine that Wikipedia is using. So why all this attention on Wikipedia? (Because it's the most well-known Wiki of all, and the press seems to think Wikipedia is the be-all-and-end-all of Wikis?) Nathan (talk) / 01:19, 1 August 2007 (UTC)
Wikipedia brought in a lot of people in to using wikis and the development of MediaWiki made it a whole lot easier for people to run wikis. I still don't like using a lot of the other wiki engines. --Simon | talk 18:26, 31 July 2007 (PDT)
Well yes, MediaWiki is what I'm used to also - and yes, they made the using wikis more widespread but still...they shouldn't get all the media attention. Nathan (talk) / 01:29, 1 August 2007 (UTC)
That's exactly why they should get the media attention, when the news talks about search do I want to hear from the people that created the first search engine or Google? --Simon | talk 09:13, 1 August 2007 (PDT)
I guess I don't agree with that thinking then. Oh well. Nathan (talk) / 18:00, 1 August 2007 (UTC)

  • The AboutUsLogo ConsensusPoll has surpassed all it's GoThresholds, all participants have been notified and the DoneTimer was started at 00:30 PDT, 30 July 2007. This means that all participants now have the opportunity to check AboutUsLogo one more time, to make sure we haven't overlooked something. Please feel free to change the document and/or change your status, if need be. TedErnst

  • When I put lists of links to organisations online I often worry that I am only offering one point of view about that organisation. It would be great if AboutUs had a small but easily readable icon then people could visit the AboutUs page by clicking on the small logo. I know that a small icon appears in the address bar but this is not quite what I had in mind. See a rough example below
Perhaps UniversalWikiEditButton? Nathan (talk) / 10:41, 21 July 2007 (UTC)
Neat idea. We have an Badge which allows people to create a link back to an AboutUs Page from their website. But it is larger and is preset to link back to the corresponding AboutUs page. I doubt it would be much work to modify that to work in the way you describe. Great idea, thanks! - Ray | talk

  • The Consensus Polling Tour could use some help. If you're interested, please visit Portal:ConsensusPolls and click on the first page of the tour (left column). If you see changes to be made, please go ahead and make them, or create a discussion section on the page itself, or use Projects:ConsensusPollTour. Thanks! TedErnst, Obed Suhail and MartinPfahler
  • Check out the way this wiki system introduces themselves via a [[1]] - the simple graphic on the first page about how pages get created is interesting as well. ~~ MarkDilley
That's really good; in addition to the video, I really like the "spread the word" picture. - Ray | talk

  • WikiVille.org.uk is closing its doors, it looks like it lost the fight against wiki spam bots. This is one of the reasons I am excited about our wiki AboutUs. We have lots of people here to revert test edits and we have a technology staff to fight spam robots. ~~ MarkDilley
  • Had a great conversation with Howard Rheingold this morning, introduced him to AboutUs and other things I care about. ~~ MarkDilley
  • WikiYou.com impressively joins the wiki evolution. WikiYou is the unauthorized biography of every person on earth. It allows everyone to openly and freely write about each other, and records the stories of their lives. ~~ MarkDilley
  • Heads up to Brandon Sanders and other AboutUs Techies. Might want to get hold of the “Scientific American” August 2007 issue and read the “Data Center in a Box” article on page 90. This has relevance to radically reducing aboutus infrastructure cost. Sun Microsystem’s gurus (previously with super computer “Thinking Machines Inc”) have enabled massive “cheap” computing power delivered to anyone’s doorstep inside a 20 foot shipping container. the article also mentions its application to social networking, cloud computing, etc. Sun claims it can provide an operational turnkey system for one-hundredth the cost of building traditional data centers. Found the online article link: Scientific America article

The idea would be to make the DailyBuzz page more valuable and at the same time keep the fun stuff for those with extra time, but put it somewhere else. Does that work for everyone? - Ray | talk
