Create Account Goes to Personal Page
What (summary)
The user should be redirected to her user page on successful account creation. The same should happen whenever the user logs in. Their user page will be created from a predefined template which has information about how they can use the site effectively.
Why this is important
Currently the user is redirected to the AboutUs homepage so creating an account and logging in doesn't feel like it adds any value. Redirecting them to their user page provides an opportunity for us to teach them about the site and encourage them to begin engaging more.
DoneDone
- On successful account creation:
- the user's MemberPage is created from MediaWiki:InitialPersonalPage.
- the user is sent an email created from MediaWiki:Confirmemail_body with subject header MediaWiki:Confirmemail_subject.
- user's client is redirected to her MemberPage.
Details
Joe decides that he wants an account on AboutUs.
- He clicks login/create account
- He is taken to a page with an enormous "Create Account" link at the top
- He clicks "Create Account"
- He fills in and submits the new account form
- His account is created, his PersonalPage gets the content from MediaWiki:InitialPersonalPage and he gets redirected to his new PersonalPage
- He finds a welcoming confirmation email in his inbox
Discussion
Email Requirement
I think this is a good idea however the way we implemented it (for a short time) seemed ineffective. I think the email "confirmation" (where the new user has to go to their email program & click a link) seems like a missed opportunity. Not only does it make new folks have to jump through hoops, that first email is a great opportunity for AboutUs to educate new members. I got a great first email from Wikinvest:

The Wikinvest Team
Each of the calls to action were links back to their site. I think this is making good use of requiring email to login. Julia
