Greater Balochistan National Congress. Struggling for the Freedom of Balochistan from the occupiers Reporter: Mir Baloch London
Baloch activists from all over Europe had gathered in Brussels to stage a peaceful demonstration on 14 Sep. 2006 during Musharraf?s visit. The demonstrators wanted to voice against Pakistani military operation in Balochistan where Pakistani army is engaged in suppressing Baloch people who are resisting Pakistani military presence on their land. During this operation hundreds of political activists including a top leader Nawab Akbar Bugti have been killed by Pakistani army and many thousands of women, children and elderly have been forced out of their homes and currently living in severe conditions. A large number of political, social and student leaders and writers of Baloch ethnicity are imprisoned by Pakistan.
Following Musharraf?s last visit to Norway in January 2006 where Baloch demonstrators had gathered in large number and had put Musharraf in a very awkward position, Musharraf did not want to risk another humiliation; therefore, he cut his tour short and flew away. Baloch activists termed this a success for them and failure for Pakistan.
Despite Musharraf?s early departure a petition signed by Balochistan Action Committee UK, Balochistan Action Committee Norway and Greater Balochistan National Congress was delivered to the European presidency. In this petition latest crimes and atrocities committed by Pakistan army against Baloch have been highlighted. The petition pointed out that in addition to previous human right crimes Pakistani forces on 4th Sep. 2006 in a raid on Kohlu and surrounding towns have arrested and taken away over 350 Marri women, children and elderly out of which the hands tied bodies of 18 people have been found in nearby roadsides. In the petition European presidency has been urged to pressurise Pakistan both politically and economically to end the ongoing operation against Baloch without any delay. In a message to media the spokesperson of Greater Balochistan National Congress said ?Baloch in Europe have proven Pakistan a terrorist country and a breeding ground for fundamentalism. Now European people and every leader in Europe know that Musharraf is a two faced leader who on one hand is trying to show himself as a moderate leader and on the other he is training and funding fundamentalists groups like Al Qaeda and Talibans. His government comprises of fundamentalists like MMA and racists ethnic groups like MQM.? He voiced against the continuous military operation in Balochistan and urged the world leaders to wake up and support Baloch in their fight against fundamentalist Pakistan.
He emphasised on the fact that only Baloch in the region with the help of civilised world could defeat terrorists and pave the way for a democratic, secular and prosperous region. He added ?as far as Balochistan is concern we regard it as an occupied country. Baloch struggle for freedom had started after the occupation by Iran and then Pakistan and slowly or swiftly Baloch will continue their struggle until the achievement of their freedom as a sovereign nation on the face of earth. Baloch never hesitated and will not hesitate to sacrifice for their freedom from the occupation of Pakistan and Iran.?
Mr. Hussain Baloch said ?Nawab Bugti?s martyrdom has breathed in a new life to Baloch struggle and Greater Balochistan National Congress will continue the struggle more vigorously using all the means permitted by international laws for defending Balochistan?s sovereignty and forcing out the occupiers.?
He thanked Brussel based the International Crisis Group for their timely report on Balochistan and welcomed their statement in which the group said ?"The military government should recognise that it faces conflict not with a handful of sardars (tribal chiefs), but with a broad-based movement for political, economic and social empowerment. The military can retain control over Baluchistan's territory through sheer force, but it cannot defeat an insurgency that has local support. Mr. Hussain Baloch also deplored Musharraf?s comments in which Mr. Musharraf branded Pahtun Nation as Talebans and more dangerous than Al Qaeda. Mr. Hussain said ?it is Pakistani ISI and MI which created Taleban and recruited trained terrorists from Punjab and Karachi who are active against the current Afghan government and the western forces.?
