Category:Air Hacksaws
Air or pneumatic hacksaws are designed to cut materials with a hacksaw or reciprocating action.
Their main advantacge is that hacksawing is considered a cold cut (as opposed to useing a grinder with an abrasive cutting wheel), so air hacksaws can generally be used in hazardous areas where explosive gases are present. ATEX approved air hacksaws are available.
Another advantage is that air hacksaws are generally more reliable than electric hacksaws and therefore suit production environments, as long as they are provided with clean, water free, lubricated air.
Their are two main types of air hacksaws - the first uses a piston motor. Two pistons, controlled by a valve unit move back and forward. One is connected to the blade holder. These saws use very little air - about 6cfm, and have a slim profile. The other type uses a vane motor which rotates a cam which oscillates the blade holder. These use more air (about 40cfm), require more maintenance and are larger than the piston powered saw, but are more powereful.
