Title
boom selection | blog of mashup, bootlegs, electro, breaks, glitch, grime and glamour
Description
with a heavy heart, it's finally time for boom selection to leave the stage. it's been a long time coming, but frankly inevitable. from now on, there will be no more proper posts on boom selection. boom will continue in its other guises, with more parties and other projects. more on those later.
we started this in november 2001, initially as a general pop culture blog in which we sorted (the 'selection') the wheat (the 'boom' - clever, innit?) from the chaff. that continued, but as we entered 2002 events took over. freelance hellraiser's a stroke of genius gained much exposure on boom, and from the number of emails we recieved it was clear that something of a craze had started. boom selection became focused on bootlegs, later to be re-termed mashups upon their transition across the atlantic, and became inseperable from the emergent movement. osymyso's intro-inspection had just recieved its first airing, and eddy and james were caning home made efforts on their radio show. without the remix, and xfm, boom selection would certainly have never come about - we strived to be the online equivalent of their show, with the same open-mindedness, passion and good humour.
personally, i have tired of it. i've been doing this 4 years now, and it's time for me to move on to something fresh and original. i never wanted to write about music. i'm no good with wanky metaphors and musically-literate descriptions. i just loved the music i was hearing, and wanted to spread it to as wide an audience as possible. blogging mp3s seemed the best way to do that. i'm moving to london now - email me if you want to buy me lunch in exchange for some poor bootleg ancedotes. while you are waiting for my autobiography to be published, if you are an overpaid music industry person you can come see me speak at the In The City music industry conference in Manchester on October 3rd. I will be on the Mashupography panel with Go Home Productions and some scary music lawyer types, so wish me luck. registration costs about £500, so i wouldn't register especially to hear me speak.
