Al Jazeera is a television network headquartered in Doha, Qatar. Initially launched as an Arabic news and current affairs satellite TV channel with the same name, Al Jazeera has since expanded into a network with several outlets, including the Internet and specialty TV channels in multiple languages, and in several regions of the world.

The English and Arabic Satellite TV News Channels

Al-Jazeera ran an arab language news channel long before it launched its english language news channel. The arab language channel is popular in the arab world, but is often condemned by western governments for its no-holds-barred politically-incorrect reporting.

The channel often gives air time to people that the US government in particular regards as being 'on the other side'. As a result, the company's english channel was banned from broadcasting in the US when it was launched.

The Arabic language channel is regarded in the Arab and Muslim world as presenting 'the other side of the story'. Critics, on the other hand, argue that the channel gives 'terrorists' an opportunity to air their message.

The arabic channel is seen in many western capitals, and particularly, in Washington, as giving voice (through air time) to terrorists and their message. Proponents of Al-Jazeera Arabic argue that both sides have a message and an ideological leaning, and consequently any neutral media must give both equal air time, and allow the audience to judge.
