- Who am I? Where do I want to go? Where have I been? Some days I question all of the previous questions myself. However, in an attempt to bring a little light on what I am hoping to do with AiAlone.com, I will indulge your (and my) curiosity: It is my delusion of grandeure to take AiAlone.com into new territory. To take my experience working as an Industrial Designer for the past 12 years and apply them to an endeavour much larger than myself. You see, I believe that the combination of successes as well as collossal failures I have been part of have formulated my view of where I see Industrial Design and the Tech Industry heading. Over the past 5 odd years in particular, I have been able to see the good, the bad, and the ugly of working in a tech company. Sierra Wireless was a fertile playground for someone with aspirations bigger than themself. One got to see a small company turn into a big(ish) company producing excellent products sitting next to complete garbage. You will likely find that I will speak more to the failures than the successes. I have been lucky enough to work directly with companies like Ziba Design (Portland) and fuseproject (San Francisco). I have been allowed the pleasure of travelling around the world to see the current state of the wireless industry first hand. Talking directly to, as well as sitting like a fly on the wall in meetings with Original Design Manufacturers (ODMs), Carriers, Sales, Marketing, etc. provides ample opportunity for one to let one's mind wander into the unknown areas of where to take your life in this truly f**ked up industry. I aim to chart a new path for (for me anyhow), into this industry. I am not heading into it blindly. I am taking pieces of puzzles from several industries and trying to make them fit into a new model of business for a deeply entrenched industry. A short list of these "other industries" are: Industrial Design Fine Art Marketing Asian Manufacturing Bespoke Tailors Blacksmithes of yore Modding Custom Automakers .... "OK, JT, that's all well and good. But really, what are you trying to do?" I want to bring custom design of high tech products to the masses. The first catagory I am wanting to tackle are mobile phones. Yup. That's it. AiAlone is a custom mobile phone manufacturer. I said it. Good grief. Now I have to start producing! When I am not trying to delude myself into thinking that I can be a custom mobile phone manufacturing guru, I am a partner in a multi-disciplinary design consultancy called OneOak Design in Richmond, BC Canada (a suburb of Vancouver).
