In my first post I want to let you know what to expect from this blog and podcast. Software Stories will be a weekly, 1 hour podcast on the history of software and the Internet. I’ve been involved with personal computer software since 1980, so I’ve lived through the PC revolution in the 80s and the Internet revolution in the 90s. A few years ago I decided to start writing about my experiences, and after a year or so of reading books on the history of computing I realized that I didn’t like what was available. They were all either memoirs told from a single point of view or journalism told in the simplest and most linear way possible. I thought there must be a better way to tell these stories, so I started taking classes at Harvard’s extension school in the History of Science, with the goal of becoming a professional software historian. Last September I started at Harvard full-time as a grad student in the History of Science department.
