About Santorini Island - Greece
Santorini is the most famous and extraordinary volcanic island in the Aegean Sea . It is the biggest island in the group with four much smaller islands called Therasia, Nea Kameni, Palia Kameni and Asprosini. The geographical aspect of Santorini has completely changed after a strong volcanic eruption that struck the island in the Minoan age. The center of the island sank into the sea during the eruption, which caused tremendous tidal waves that destroyed Minoan civilization that flourished on the island at the time. There are scholars who believe that the legend of the lost continent of Atlantis originated from the catastrophe of Santorini and it is probable that this event also influenced Plato's writings. Today Santorini is home of the last active volcano is Greece which still smoulders, while the residents of Santorini can from time to time feel gentle tremor in the ground. Santorini is also home of the largest caldera on earth (7x14 miles).
The landscape on the island is impressive and the architecture is picturesque. The gorgeous volcanic cliffs rising above the sea are coloured red, brown and green, and are crowned with a garland of typical white village houses. Perhaps the most well-known church tower in Greece , known from thousands of photos and postcards, is on Santorini. The official name of the island is Thira, but the tourists and foreigners call it by the name given in the honor of its patron saint, St. Irene of Thessaloniki , who died here while in exile in 304 A.D. Thira is the capital of the island and is built on the terraces, cut into the volcanic cliff. The cascades are full of bars, restaurants and hotels, as well as houses and churches of Cycladic type. From the cliff-top of Santorini, where the villages are built, you look down over gentle green mountain slopes to the vivid blue sea, which has filled the crater of the volcano. This extraordinary and dramatic contrast can leave you breathless. On the island there are ruins of the ancient city of Thira dating from the fourth century B.C. Among local festivals, special place goes to the celebration with fireworks which is organized every 15 th of August in the honour of the volcano. The vegetation on Santorini is scarce apart from vines. The beauty of Santorini largely depends on light, and that's why the sunsets of Santorini are a true magic and the greatest spectacle for many visitors. It is the time of the day when this black pearl of the Aegean reveals its exceptional and unmatched beauty through a unique and exciting aesthetic experience.
