天神橋は豊臣秀吉のころ初めて架けられ、天満宮が管理していたことから天神橋になったと社伝は伝えている。寛永11年（1634）他の11橋とともに公儀橋となった。中でも天満橋・難波橋とともに浪華の三大橋と親しまれ、“天神橋長いなー落ちたら恐いなー”と童歌にも歌われた。 明治初期までは木橋であったが、明治18年の大水害で流失、同21年鉄橋に架けかえられた。この橋は、ドイツより輸入されたトラス橋で当時全国で最も長径間の道路橋であった。現在の橋は松屋町筋の拡張に合せ、昭和9年に3連の軽快な鋼製アーチと両端をコンクリートアーチより成り、全長210.7mで架設されている。
