Gaming Addiction a Real Issue? Article by Gaming Technology Blog

A latest online study indicates that hard core gamers that spend more than forty hours each week hip deep in their virtual world are not as antisocial and “nerdy” as everybody once thought they were. The study done by David Loton, an Australian Psychology Graduate, found that only one percent of the serious gamers surveyed actually displayed poor social skills and suffered from low self esteem issues. The survey was done online and involved only 612 respondents with only 15 percent of them actually identifying themselves as “gaming addicts”. People tend to be more brazen online than they would be in real life, which calls into question the validity of the report. Yet, the idea of a game player who also plays well outside has some substance to it.

The development of a more sociable gamer could have resulted from the advent of online gaming in which individuals are forced to interact with others. The avatars that we interact with online have become infused with more human emotion and are subjected more to societal mores as gaming technology pushes the boundaries of our control over these virtual environments. Running amok at random and blowing everything up without forethought is becoming less acceptable as the Gaming Generation grows and matures. As spending all day ensconced within the digitized universe becomes more of the norm for the general population, the bad habits that come with such behavior began to become more acceptable to society. The severe gamer is no longer the nerdy guy in the corner picking his nose, it is now the everyman, the boy next door type who spends many long quiet nights in front of his LCD screen television, playing HALO with his buddy who lives a few blocks away.

While it is good to know that Gaming addiction might not have any real bad side effects, it is even nicer to find out that sitting in front of the computer may actually have a positive affect. There are other studies out there that have found that playing video games can actually have beneficial effects on the individual. Playing video games in the classroom has been found to help come students problem solving and spatial relation skills and make them more prone to interact with your peers in order to solve the presented problem. Supporters of the gaming industry point to this observation and the claim that gaming does not cause shy as proof of the businesses positive side effects of the multi-billion dollar business.

If used correctly, gaming technology can help nurture and develop the next generation. Yet, like everything else in this world, it is good to practice a bit of moderation in your daily gaming habits. While gaming technology news may be rife with reports of how playing too many video games does not make people social outcasts, there are studies that show that people with already poor social skill can become overly dependent upon a fake world that lets them act boldly.
