Description
The Prison Book Project is a small, 100% volunteer group based in Northampton, Massachusetts. We opened our doors in 1998 with the purpose of providing free reading materials to the millions of incarcerated people across the country.
Since then, we have been successful in not only sending over 10,000 books behind bars, but we have organized and hosted public events on prison issues, published a newsletter featuring prisoner artwork and poetry, hosted prisoner art-shows, been featured in newspaper articles and radio shows, taught a high-school curriculum on prison issues, released a benefit CD featuring local artists and high school students, and, most importantly, built a community of people who understand that mass-incarceration of our community members does not make our streets safer.
