In 2000, a new organization, Pride of Greater Fort Lauderdaledecided to recreate gay pride in Fort Lauderdale. They would take the festival out of the city parks and convention center and move it into the street, Wilton Drive to be exact in the heart of South Florida's gay community. They then decided to bring back the gay pride parade and have it start off the festival and have the route go through the festival itself. Most importantly, they decided the festival would be free to the public.
