- Everybody will become presbyopic at some point. It usually happens between ages 40 and 50. So what is presbyopia? It is simply the aging of the eye. As you age, the natural lens in your eye hardens and loses its ability to change shape or flex to accommodate. This results in near vision becoming blurry. It becomes hard to focus on a menu without squinting or wearing reading glasses. Working on a computer, reading the newspaper, sewing, reading a map, and many other activities that we take for granted are virtually impossible without reading glasses, bifocals.
