事業概要当協会は、ニューメディアに関する調査開発、普及啓発などを行う経済産業省の認可団体であり、ニューメディアブームの先駆けとなった通商産業省の家庭情報化プロジェクトHi-OVIS Projectを実施するために、1972年に設立された財団法人映像情報システム開発協会を母体としています。これまで、レイティング／フィルタリングシステムや電子公証システムなどのインターネット利用環境整備のためのシステム開発、原本性保証電子保存システムやインターネット電子申請システムなどの情報化社会を実現するための基盤的システムの開発、次世代ICカードシステムの開発、インターネット人口実態調査などを行ってきました。最近では、経済産業省への申請業務における多くの手続きをインターネット経由で電子的に可能にする「汎用電子申請システム ITEM2000」の開発や、全国21地域において非接触インターフェースや公開鍵暗号の使用を可能にする「次世代ICカード」を120万枚以上配布して、ICカードの公的利用
