I was born in Dayton, Ohio and raised in New York City and Kingwood, Texas. I attended the University of Texas at Austin, where I majored in theater. In 1993, I attended the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism and graduated in 1994. It was there that I developed an interest in religion reporting, thanks to the influence of my favorite teacher, Ari Goldman, former religion reporter for the New York Times.
