Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that attacks the tissue that surrounds and protects many vital organs in the human body. The tissue that it affects is known as the Mesothelium. Mesothelioma makes lung cells uncontrollably divide. The cancer cells then begin to invade nearby organs and cause damage to them as well. Pleural mesothelioma is the most common form of this cancer and it affects the sac lining the chest cavity that protects the lungs. Peritoneal mesothelioma affects the abdominal area while pericardial mesothelioma damages the lining surrounding the heart. Mesothelioma tumors can be benign or malignant; however, in most cases they are considered extremely dangerous.
