It is widely accepted that the first ever gift voucher or gift certificate was the British Book Token launched in 1932. These were sold online for the very first time in the year 2000 by FirstBookshop.com and shortly after this they were renamed National Book Tokens. In addition to the British Book Token, First Bookshop went on to also distribute the British Theatre Token online.
