Companion for MS SQL 2005 is a product that collects, analyzes and displays information about the inner workings of MS SQL 2005 database servers. Some examples of the information our product can provide are:
a) who is causing deadlocks; b) who is causing blocking; c) what hardware resources are overutilized; d) is there contention on TempDB and who is causing it; e) what indexes are missing; f) what indexes are non needed; g) what indexes are used the most; h) what queries are using the most CPU, reads and writes; i) what queries are being called the most; j) are execution plans being reused; k) what is the baseline for the server; l) what tables/indexes need de-fragmentation; m) what are the largest tables/indexes; n) what are the tables with the most rows; o) what is the average row-length inside each table; p) what statements are being recompiled and why; q) what will be the size of the database in 6 months or next year; r) how has the baseline changed in the past month; s) what queries are using cursors; etc. The product also collects Performance Monitor (PerfMon) information and uses it to create a baseline and isolate hardware bottlenecks. While there are numerous software packages out there that collect PerfMon data, but they can't provide you with the answers to the questions above. Companion will do both – and with minimal impact on your server!
