Dad

My dad just bought the top model of MacBook Pro for my youngest sister Earn a few days ago. Everybody in my family, except me, was surprised that dad bought it very quickly, especially that Earn never asked dad to buy it.

Earn was about to buy the simplest model herself. She was trying to find the best price. She posted a question in our family forum last Thursday asking Ig and me about the student discount price of MacBook Pro in the US and Australia. The US price was much lower but Earn couldn’t wait for Ig to come back to Thailand at the end of this year. I suggested her to call my friend who owns a Mac shop near our house in Bangkok. On Monday midnight, dad, under mom’s username, asked me in the forum to compare the spec of the middle model of MacBook Pro with a new Sony VAIO. I checked the hardware specs and they’re very similar. That’s not the point actually. The point is when I saw that post, I knew dad would buy one as soon as he got my answer plus Earn’s preference. I called Earn and told her to talk to dad not to buy it now because we’re checking for the best price. I told Earn dad would certainly buy it in 1-2 days unless we told him not to. However, Earn only posted in the forum on Tuesday that she prefered Mac and she’s checking for the price from her friend who also sells Mac. On Wednesday evening, Earn posted in the forum that dad bought it already, not the simplest or the middle model, but the very top model of MacBook Pro. Earn was so surprised and happy. Ig and Om were surprised as well. Mom wasn’t surprised but she didn’t know dad would buy it in 1-2 days like that. I wasn’t surprised at all. I knew dad would buy it that fast and he always goes for the best for mom and us. Fortunately, none of us ever gets spoiled. It’s the opposite. Whenever we want anything, we usually won’t tell dad because we don’t want him to buy it for us. We’ll just try to buy it ourselves. However, even though we won’t tell him, dad usually knows somehow. And dad is quick. As soon as he knows, he will buy the best one for us.

Actually it’s not that dad will buy anything for us. He only buy things relating to work and study for us, but the range of things keeps growing to include a lot many. However, when we were young, I remember my sisters and I never had fancy toys like other kids. But when we grew up a bit and I started to learn computer at school, dad bought us the best PC (for that time) and he bought a new one for us every two years on average. When I wanted to buy books, not necessarily textbooks but could be any kinds of books, I could always ask dad for money. But I wouldn’t get money for things like fancy clothes, pop music CDs, gifts for friends, and the like. Dad knows when to be kind and when to be strict.
