A URL (Uniform Resource Locator) is an address that points to where a website or file can be found on the Web.

At its simplest, a URL consists of:

the protocol:
http://www.example.com
and
the website's domain name:
http://www.example.com

A URL can also include:

a directory or directories:
http://www.example.com/folder/file.txt
and
a file name:
http://www.example.com/folder/file.txt
