Discussion

As David Hart says in his notes, he sets spam traps. A spam trap is a semi-secret email address, one not generally known. Send an email to that address & you are instantly judged a spammer & your email / IP address is immediately added to Hart's blacklist.

I sell books. I sell them world-wide. Here is an exchange I had earlier this week (I've edited out names & email addresses:

Hi Dave,

Yes I am Dutch.

I prefer a new book so I will wait for the American print of Light on life. You can send all 3 together because I don t mind waiting a bit. With the holidays and family coming there will be not much time left to read J. Would you be so kind to send me an email when you ship the books?

We moved in October so you probably have my old address: S.... 92, 7218 NP Almen.

My new address is: D.... 4, 7216 PE Kring van Dorth, The Netherlands

Yes you can charge my creditcard.

Thanks, J....

Hello J....,

You are Dutch? Shipping to the Netherlands, for all three books together, would be $11.50. I have Morin & Maternus in stock. The American printing of Light on Life is out of stock until next Wednesday, but I have a slightly battered Indian printing for $10.00, if you like. If so, I have your credit card on file. To ship your order, all I would need is your permission to charge the card.

I hope this is helpful. Thanks!

Dave

[end of emails]

The important part to the above exchange (only the beginning & end of which actually reached me) is the persistence of the Dutch in getting around my blocked email address.

I asked the Dutch for an example of a bounced email. The essence of their reply was (Aboutus's formatting in this section is bad):

Your message

 To:
 Subject: FW: books
 Sent: Fri, 15 Dec 2006 10:05:31 +0100

did not reach the following recipient(s):

on Fri, 15 Dec 2006 18:10:20 +0100

The e-mail system was unable to deliver the message, but did not

report a specific reason. Check the address and try again. If it still fails, contact your system administrator.

According to this message, Spam was being received from IP address 213.75.38.110

This is not my IP address. It is actually a Dutch outfit. There are places on-line where you can look up IP addresses, and domain names, to get name, address & other contact details, both for 213.75.38.110, and for mine, which is in the US.

tqmcube.com is David Hart's anti-spam operation.

So I went to Hart's site & sent a request for removal from his lists. I explicitly stated the IP address that he had reported as causing trouble, and I explicitly gave my own, complete with contact name, address & phone number, as listed by my DNS.

Quick as a flash, I got back this message:

The following is in response to your request to [Remove] 213.75.38.110 from our block lists:

Last spam received: 2006-12-12 I'll even tell you the spam trap that it his (harvested from Usenet): That is the reply handle that David Hart uses in News.Admins.Net-Abuse.Email

This IP address is quarantined. We need to know what you have done - or what you plan to do - to resolve this problem.

I've kept pretty much every email I've ever gotten in the 11 years I've been on-line. So I did a search for

The only record of it that I have is in TQMCube's email, as quoted above.

The harvest site, boulderpledge.org, is another of David Hart's websites, as a simple Whois will confirm. If you try to enter "www.boulderpledge.org" into a browser, you are redirected to http://tqmcube.com/pledge.php

I don't accept that having legitimate emails trashed, communication between private parties interrupted, is something we should encourage. The laws have long prohibited this sort of tampering when the message in question was ink on paper, I do not see any significant difference with email communications.

Normally when someone gets in your face & will not leave when politely asked, the aggrieved party goes to the local courthouse & gets an injunction. I do not know why this is not being done for abusive spamcops, especially when their offices are in a nice shiny new building in New York City.

In particular, the phrase,

"We need to know what you have done - or what you plan to do - to resolve this problem."

starts to sound nasty. Is there any difference between this, and the heavy who walks into a shop & casually observes that, gee, it would be a shame if there was a fire, and, oh, by the way, do you know that we sell fire insurance?

"We need to know what you have done - or what you plan to do - to resolve this problem", in its open-ended way, can be interpreted as a request for money under the table. A protection racket.

As is typical with spam cops, Hart claims he is infallible:

First, you need to know what zone you are listed in. The zone is reflected in the rejection message.

Spam: We have spam from your IP address directed to a spam trap (see our definition of spam). False positives are almost non-existent. [From http://tqmcube.com/faq.php]

In the message bounced, above, is the phrase,
