More Men Take It Off as Body Hair Removal for Men Hits an All-Time High
By JoAnne Daris, Director of Clinical Training at a national laser center
With the summer solstice leaving us in its SPF30-soaked wake, the trends of summer have reared their seasonally covered hairy heads. Thankfully, this summer there are options to dismantle that socially-devastating bomb that is excessive male body hair.
You understand the scene all too well: It’s a strikingly warm, beautiful July Saturday. Weary of occupying the climate-controlled house for another day, you decide to pack the family up and head for the nearest body of water. Your beach umbrella has been pitched for the optimal cooling-shade—to—tanning-sun ratio and the children are attempting to play Marco-polo in a pool filled to its crest.
As you crank the soothing sound of your personal music player up, you take notice that your precious avenue to the sun has been penetrated by what appears to be an overweight and sweat-matted bear in board shorts, who is now occupying the space directly in front of you. Initially alarmed that a Sasquatch has invaded your organic tanning machine, you gasp in horror, only to realize—to your paralyzing shame—that your husband has tired of swimming and has come to sit next to you. How can one person have so much hair across their entire body, you ask?
Thankfully, the options for male hair removal are no longer limited to the steady handling of a straight blade, and more men than ever before are stepping up to the counters of laser hair removal centers across the country. According to recent data, the nation’s largest laser hair removal chain saw a 337 percent increase between 2003 and 2007 in the number of men who received laser hair removal, and the trend is not limited solely to the common public. A recent tabloid account reports that artists and pop-culture ambassadors Jay-Z and Puff Daddy have enthusiastically (if not silently) embraced the hair-less revolution.
From a professional perspective as a nurse practitioner who performs laser hair removal, I can certainly say that we’ve seen a substantial increase in the number of men who have hand-raised for safe and effective laser hair removal treatments. In fact, men now make up 20% of the customers at all of my company’s locations.
The main concerns for men usually include the stigma and their falsely-perceived fear of the pain that they expect to endure during the treatment. The reality is, laser hair removal is safe, painless and most clients experience no side effects at all and are able to resume their normal day-to-day activities immediately. Depending on where the process is to take place, men may find it comforting to know that the type of laser being used is not harmful to the region that it is being applied to, and there are no long term effects to worry about (aside from the lack of hair, of course!).
To understand how laser hair removal works, it is important to understand hair and how it grows. Human hairs are made up of three parts: the bulb at the base of the hair follicle (which produces hair), the shaft and the hair. The bulb and the shaft are embedded beneath the surface of the skin, therefore the hair is the only part visible to the naked eye. The hair growth cycle is comprised of three stages: telogen, catagen and anagen. At any given time, approximately 30 percent of your hair is in its anagen growth stage, which is the only time the hair is susceptible to laser hair removal treatments. Each laser hair reduction session will permanently damage 30 percent of the hair follicles in the treatment area.
Essentially, laser hair removal works by destroying the hair follicle. The only way to permanently reduce the amount of unwanted hair is to damage the hair follicle to a point where is unable to produce hairs. The hairs that are destroyed with each treatment are destroyed permanently. While patient protocol is determined on a case-by-case basis, on average our centers recommend a minimum of six treatments, spread about two months apart per treatment.
Modern laser hair removal—like what is used our clinic locations—is really a marvel of technology and has effectively removed the discomfort that was once associated with laser hair removal and are still associated with some of the older equipment that is out there in non-specialty clinics.
Even more comforting to know is the idea that the stigma that surrounds laser hair removal is also being eroded as more and more men listen to the scorn of an angry society and begin taking notice of their hairy-selves. Many of our former male clients report back that they are so impressed with the compliments that they receive, that they have recommended the treatment to all of their friends.
Likewise, many of our female patients recommend the service to their male significant others, who can stand to lose a few strands. As men across the country hear this as a call to (less hairy) action, society as a whole will applaud their efforts towards this hair-less revolution. Might we envision a day when false Sasquatch sightings are a thing of the past? With the help of laser hair removal, I sure hope so.

By combining the laser and RF technologies they have also created a system that makes laser hair removal a safe and effective option for people with darker skin tones or lighter hair colors.
