Launched in 1998, DomainCollection.com is a domain name broker and reseller that purchased thousands of domains during the dotcom boom and then supposedly sold its inventory to speculators; it however still acts as a web domain broker through its site. DomainCollection.com seems to have a long history of arbitrations involving some of the domains it provides due to cyber squatting, similarities or trademark infringements by some of its domains. Domain buyers can typically contact DomainCollection.com through the main site, or if they reach a site handled by DomainCollection they can ask for a price quote which is supposedly good for 10 days, however DomainCollection has been known to reduce their prices drastically after haggling.

History

DomainCollection.com appears to also own an older website http://www.domaingallery.com/ which provides a much better way to browse through its many available domains in alphabetical order. The DomainCollection.com site states its current address as PO Box 821067, Vancouver, WA 98682 while the current address for Domaingallery.com is 1500 San Remo Av, Suite 125, Miami, FL 33146 as of 2001. Its policy is that while DomainCollection makes every effort to avoid trademark infringement, it is unfeasible for it to research the thousands of domains it handles see it there is a violation, which seems to make good sense.

The DomainCollection.com site provides links in its footers to government agencies and channels that webmasters can use if they feel their trademarks are being violated. One of the links goes to ICANN Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution and the other forwards to the USPTO Web Trademark Database. The search form on DomainCollection.com is not a very user friendly way to find available domains so a better alternative might be to browse through Domaingallery.com or contact the company through its contact page.

Arbitrations

Several arbitrations handled by the National Arbitration Forum, between DomainCollection.com and various companies are viewable online; usually ending with DomainCollection or its customers relinquishing the contested domains to the other party. Some of the arbitrations include, American Automobile Association, Incorporated for the domain triptik.com and Huge Sportswear Incorporated for huge.biz. These arbitrations appear to make DomainCollection.com guilty of some cyber squatting, meaning it only obtained the sites so future webmasters would have no other option but to pay premium rates for the sites.

In some of the arbitrations, DomainCollection.com uses different names such as Cambridge Capital Investments, Highlands or iHoldings.com and allegedly owned as many as 68,000 domains, leading to it being nicknamed the Internet Mafia on sites like Expert exchange for being too sleazy and opportunistic. In several of the lost arbitrations DomainCollection.com lost for obtaining or selling domains in “bad faith” simply with the purpose of reselling them at a future date.

DomainCollection.com does not seem to be guilty of much more than cyber squatting on large numbers of domains with the intention of one day making a profit on them since new business owner would have to pay premium prices to obtain domains that would usually be worth $10. In one online article, a buyer managed to buy one of DomainCollection’s domains for $199 even though she was originally quoted $3,900.
