Company
Johnson & Johnson is a pharmaceutical, medical device, and consumer packaged goods manufacturing company founded in 1886 and headquartered in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Now approaching their one-and-one-quarter-century mark of being in business, Johnson & Johnson enjoys a position of being one of the most recognized names in personal care and medical products in the industrialized world. Beyond this, they have over 230 subsidiary companies which span the globe, ensuring a presence if not dominance in every branch of the health care products industry.
Products
Johnson & Johnson's line of products are very numerous and diversified. Most readers will be familiar with their consumer brand name products, especially their personal care products. Together with their subsidiary companies, their products number into the thousands and span hundreds of categories. A list of some of their better-known products include:

They are one of the world's preeminent sources of biopharmaceutical medicines, and through several of their research companies use cutting-edge knowledge in biotechnology to discover and develop innovative large-molecule and small-molecule medicines.
Website
JNJ.com is a sophisticated portal through which you may find many sections detailing their business practices and products. The main sections of their site are:
- Products
- Our Company
- Investor Relations
- Innovations
- News
- Social Responsibility
- Careers
...plus many more subsections. An impressive part of the site is a page within the Innovations category called "submit idea"; they are demonstrating that they are in touch with their customer base by putting the suggestion box right up front. This is apparently related to their research in various medical fields.
Also of note is the Johnson & Johnson credo which is to be found in the "Our Business" section. Not content to have a motto, a one-line jingle, or a mission statement, the credo sets out a whole page about their company philosophy.
One more innovation that really puts the website JNJ.com in a league of its own is the easy access to a text-only version of the entire website! This is an especially blessed aid both to the handicapped who may have to use text-to-speech screen readers, and to those visiting the site with a slower connection or older computer and even non-proprietary software. This, more than anything, demonstrates a commitment to the visitor and customer alike, where other companies are too concerned with putting on a big, flashy show.
History
In 1885, Brothers Robert Wood Johnson, James Wood Johnson, and Edward Mead Johnson created a line of ready-to-use surgical dressings. The company produced its first products in 1886 and incorporated in 1887. Robert Wood Johnson became the first president of the company, which he oversaw until his death in 1910. Since then, he has been succeeded by eight company presidents, the first three of which were his direct descendants.
In the late 1920s, Johnson & Johnson added consumer products to their line and by 1941 they had created a separate division of surgical products under the division name of Ethicon. In the 1970s and 80s they purchased the companies McNeil Laboratories, Inc., Cilag, and Janssen Pharmaceutica, which allowed them to expand into pharmaceuticals. Most recently in 2006, they have purchased the Pfizer Corporation's Consumer Healthcare department.
Amongst their many distinguishing marks in history, they were the first to provide emergency disaster relief in San Francisco during the earthquake of 1906. Their most recent innovation is the iBot Independent Mobility System, a kind of robotically enhanced wheelchair to greater assist the handicapped with day-to-day living. Heirs of the Johnson family have famously been vocal and active, including one who wrote an autobiography.
A complete listing of the company's history, including the acquisition of or forming of their over 230 subsidiary companies, is available on the website as well.
Business Profile
Johnson & Johnson reports revenue in excess of $53 billion for the year 2006. They employ over 116,000 thousand workers in facilities, plants, and research laboratories all over the world. Their Fortune 500 ranking is #32.
