The southwestgiftcard can be purchased at southwest.com in any amount starting at $10, and for last-minute givers, a free e-mail can be sent to the recipient, usually within an hour of purchase. Or, an actual card can be sent to you or your loved ones for a small shipping fee. Redemption is easy; southwestgiftcards can be used at southwest.com, through our Reservations Center, or at one of our airport ticket counters — plus the cards never expire. Like any technical innovation, People are behind the southwestgiftcard, and my regular readers know how I LUV to write about our People. An electronic gift card sounds like a simple proposition, but it isn’t. This project touched, if you will, a lot of our departments and computer systems. Because the gift cards represent our Customers’ money and can be used to purchase travel, computer systems in our Finance, Reservations, and Ground Operations departments, plus our web site, southwest.com, all have to speak the southwestgiftcard “language” in a way the others can understand. Folks from all of those departments; folks in our Technology Department; and folks who assist our Customers from our Customer Relations/Rapid Rewards Department and my own office, had to be in the loop while the program was being designed.
